Oversized breasts can cause very real physical problems such as chronic neck, upper back and shoulder pain, or even postural deformities and breathing difficulties. For these women, breast reduction surgery is often considered a practical health solution. Combine these physical factors with the psychological, emotional and aesthetic burden of having oversized breasts and you can understand why plastic surgeons and patients alike say that the breast reduction procedure can produce life changing results. Women who seek the surgery say that they are tired of suffering embarrassment or harassment because of their breast size. Many of these women have endured teasing and unwelcome attention since puberty. Perhaps the size of their breasts has adversely affected their relationships, socially and sexually.
It may have severely limited their ability to exercise or play sport due to pain, chafing and rashes. Simple tasks like shopping for clothes may have become a source of depression, as breast size limits the style of clothing that can be worn and many garments simply don't fit. For these women, undergoing a breast reduction offers the opportunity to have a normal life. Women who have had this operation frequently say that it was the best thing that they ever have done for themselves and their only regret is that they didn't do it sooner.
Breast reduction surgery is necessary when the volume of a patient's breasts is too large in proportion to the rest of the body. Breast reduction can offer relief from the physical discomfort and psychological problems caused by large breasts. The procedure will also improve the shape of the breast.
While breast reduction can be performed at any age, it is recommended that it be undertaken only when breast development has stopped.
Dr Rodrigo recommend that the surgery be performed as early as possible in order to minimize scarring. Scar development is always difficult to predict. Scars change from red and swollen during the first few days to become white and thin at the end of the first month, and eventually they fade but never entirely disappear.
After a breast reduction, the breasts will recover their natural curves enabling one to wear the clothes that previously they could only dream of wearing. With breasts that are much more in proportion to the rest of your body, patients will experience a tremendous sense of relief from a new, smaller cup size, feeling so much lighter and freer. Childbirth and breastfeeding can have a significant effect on the size and shape of your breasts. Though some women decide to have a breast reduction before having children, any plans to breastfeed should be discussed with Dr Rodrigo. Patients - after the breast reduction - will have a greatly improved self-image and much more self-confidence.
The results of a breast reduction are immediately visible, even though the final results are fully apparent approximately one year after surgery.

Possible Risks and Complications
after Breast Reduction
When breast reduction is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. You can reduce your risks by closely following your surgeon's instructions both before and after surgery. The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can only be determined at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
Breast Reduction After care
After surgery a small tube may be placed in each breast to drain blood and fluids for the first day or two. The extent of the post-operative swelling and bruising is depending on whether you tend to bruise or swell easily. The bandages will be removed a day or two after surgery and the patient will continue wearing the bra around the clock for several weeks. In most cases, stitches will be removed in one week. Depending upon the type of surgery performed, you may be remain hospitalized for up to 2 days. Your doctor will give you instructions in your post-operative care.If you feel any severe pain, call your surgeon immediately. Most of the swelling and bruising should disappear within two weeks or so. There should be no lifting or pushing, putting strain on the chest muscles, for up to 2 months. Dr Rodrigo will let you know when you are ready for exercise. During your healing period avoid drinking alcohol, which can lead to fluid retention and delay recovery.
You should wear a supportive wire-less bra a few weeks, until the swelling goes down. The wound should be keep dry. The sutures will be removed after 10-14 days; Absorbable sutures will take at least six weeks to dissolve. You should not be sexually active for a few weeks, since it may cause painful swellings in your breasts.
