Plastic Surgery Budapest - Rhytidectomy - Facelift

A Facelift (Rhytidectomy) improves the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redrapes the skin of your face and neck.

Skin on the face and neck lose elasticity as one ages. Underlying muscles also loses tone. This is magnified through sun exposure, weight gain or loss, gravity and stress. These factors may act together and accentuate the appearance of wrinkles, creating a tired look. A facelift helps improve the most visible signs of aging through removal and redistributing excess fat deposits, tightening underlying muscles and removing sagging skin. Facelifts are helpful for eliminating loose skin folds in the neck and laxity of tissues in the cheeks.

The areas not well corrected by a facelift include the nasolabial folds and perioral mounds marionette lines which are more suitably treated with B0T0X or liposculpture, respectively. A facelift requires skin incisions; however, the incisions in front of and behind the ear are usually inconspicuous. The standard facelift addresses the lower 1/3 of the face and the upper neck. Variants include the mini and extended facelift procedures. Procedure choices depend on your needs and must be discussed with your surgeon.

Facelift surgery (Rhytidectomy) can also be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery  (blepharoplasty), nose reshaping (rhinoplasty),chin and cheek implants, liposculpture. Although a face lift can't stop the aging process, it can help turn back the clock.  A face-lift operation can make you look 10 years younger. So, if you are 50 years old, you could look 40, when you are 60 years old, you could look 50, etc. Facelift typically performed in conjunction  are: brow lift, to correct a sagging or deeply furrowed brow, and eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes.

You must note

As a restorative surgery, a facelift does not change your fundamental appearance and cannot stop the aging process. The texture and quality of the skin will not be changed or altered by a facelift surgery. Acne scars, age spots, fine lines and smoker’s creases will soon return to their original consistency, no matter how tight the skin is pulled. A facelift will not provide someone beautiful skin unless they have beautiful skin to begin with.A range of non-surgical cosmetic procedures are available to improve texture and appearance of skin like laser resurfacing, IPL or micro dermabrasion.

Anesthesia

Facelift procedures may be performed under local anesthesia with or without oral sedation, conscious sedation, and general anesthesia. When local anesthesia is used, you will be relaxed and pain free, but may feel some tugging or pulling.

Duration of operation

Rhytidectomy usually takes about two to three hours.

Typical time for recovery after rhytidectomy

Depending on the length of the operation, you may be allowed go home after a few hours, or remain in hospital for one or two of days. Most patients return to work within 10 to 14 days after the surgery.

Possible risks and complications

As with any operation, there are risks associated with a facelift, such as reactions to the anaesthetic, bleeding, haematoma, and nerve damage. Haematomas are collections of blood under the skin and, if small, can be absorbed of their own accord over several days.
Drainage may be required for larger haematomas. Injury to the nerves that control facial muscles is usually only temporary, but can result in numbness to some areas of the face.
Operation scars are permanent. They do fade over time and are usually hardly noticeable, as they are often hidden, either by your hair or the natural creases in your skin.

After care

As the anesthesia wears off post surgery - your face may ache, and you may have a dull headache. Your face may feel tight and sore , but you can control any discomfort with the pain medication prescribed by your surgeon. If you feel any severe pain, call your surgeon immediately. Plan on staying in bed with your head elevated (except for going to the bathroom) for the first day.
The swelling and bruising around your face will increase at first, reaching a peak after two or three days. Applying cold compresses will reduce this swelling and make you feel better. Most of the swelling and bruising should disappear within two weeks or so. (Some subtle swelling-unnoticeable to anyone but you and your surgeon-will remain for several months. Your surgeon will let you know when you are ready for exercise. During your healing period avoid drinking alcohol, which can lead to fluid retention and delay recovery. It may take two-three months for swelling to fully dissipate and up to 6 months for incision lines to mature.

The results after the facelift surgery will be long-lasting. Life-long sun protection will help to maintain your rejuvenated appearance by minimizing photo-aging or sun damage. In addition, a healthy lifestyle will also help extend the results of your rejuvenated, more youthful appearance.
